Design Icon: Tom Scheerer
One of my primary goals as a designer is being able to establish a style that feels completely authentic and natural to my aesthetic. I love spaces that are imperfect, slightly disheveled, like someone just left the room. It's not a style that works in all cases, but I study ways to bring this sort of casualness to every project we work on. A designer I've always admired, and who has this sort of easy-living goodness down to a science is Tom Scheerer. His work is celebrated for its loosely-tailored panache, that looks chic without being pretentious - in other words, an absolute Design Icon.
Elements ubiquitous in Tom's work: vintage Thonet bentwood chairs and benches, natural elements like cypress and raw stone, cleverly juxtaposed with classic modern pieces like a Saarinan tulip table all combine to create a sort of irreverent nod to high class.
Tom's work spans from his first apartment in NYC, to bungalows in Florida, and all have the sort of approachable ease that makes the guest never want to leave.
It's a study in less is more, especially when quality is at hand. A good take-away for any day!
