Apr 2 Pretty Essentials – The Social Distancing Edition

We are living in a new world. One where the importance of hand washing has become a common topic. As we come to grips with the need to practice social distancing, and stay in place orders, I find that I’m seeking comfort in small ways, and trying to take pleasure in little gestures to help ease anxiety. The other day, an Instagram friend mentioned her favorite liquid hand soap had run out, and she was seeking recommendations for something that smells nice, comes in a pretty bottle, and makes the constant of hand washing a little more pleasant. I could totally relate to this need - okay, desire - to preserve an aesthetic standard. Even in a time when ultimately, any soap, sanitizer, etc will do.

In my mind, when everything in the world feels so unsure, I want to try that much more to keep my home environment as a place that provides me and my family a sense of familiarity and calm. For me, that means surrounding ourselves with a space that feels (at any given time) calm, uplifting, and safe. The way I do that is to attract our senses: pleasant smells, cozy textures, atmospheric music, etc. For me, that’s comfort.

Maybe there will be a time when function and practicality outweigh style, but for me, choosing necessities that are enjoyable to see, smell, and use just might keep me on the rails during this truly sad and crazy time.
